March Birchbox

IMG_6890

This month, the people at Birchbox gave their subscribers a choice between two boxes. The regular March box or a special Teen Vogue box. I decided to go with the regular March box because I thought that the Teen Vogue box would be geared more towards teens and their beauty needs. That choice ended up being a big mistake, but I'll talk more about that later. Here's what I got in my box...

1) Annick Goutal Eau d'Hadrien - Not a fan of this perfume at all. It has a strong lemon scent (think cleaning supplies) that goes away after only a few minutes. This is good for me because I don't like the smell, but bad for people out there who do like "clean" scents and want them to last throughout the day.

2) Color Club Nail Lacquer in Jackie Oh! - This polish was the only thing in my box that I really liked this month. It's hot pink, which is perfect for spring/summer and is basically opaque after one coat. I'll probably use two coats when I wear it, but you could get away with just one. My one complaint is that the bottle isn't full-size. The people who got the Teen Vogue box got a full-size polish. Why didn't we?

3) One Love Organics Skin Savior Waterless Beauty Balm - This product can be used as a cleanser or a moisturizer and can be used on your face or your body. I didn't use it on my face because I'm always hesitant to try new products on my face, but I did use it on my hands. I'm sad to say that I had to throw it away after just one use because it was so greasy! My hands looked like I had just eaten a bucket of fried chicken! Also, the dry patches on my hands still felt very rough after I applied it. The balm really just sat on the tops of my hands. It didn't sink into my skin and there was nothing moisturizing about it. I'm actually really sad that this product didn't work out because it smells amazing! Like a fruity orange drink.

4) Oscar Blandi Pronto Wet Instant Volumizing Shampoo and Conditioner - This shampoo is supposed to help give your hair lots of volume and the conditioner is supposed to soften your hair and help it dry faster. I've used both four different times now and haven't noticed any changes, good or bad. The one big negative for me with these products is the smell. They smell like Pledge (the wood cleaner) and that smell lasts on your hair for several hours.

5) Kusmi Tea Detox Tea (Bonus) - I'm not a tea drinker and my husband wasn't interested, so I threw them away :(

So as I'm sure you can tell, I once again wasn't happy with my box this month :/

Which box did you choose? The Teen Vogue box or the regular Birchbox? What did you get in your box? Were you happy with your samples?

*As I mentioned earlier, Birchbox sent out two different boxes this month. A Teen Vogue box and the regular March box. The people who chose the Teen Vogue box received a full-size Essie nail polish, a full size Tarte LipSurgence (a lip tint), and then a few other smaller samples.

Now my question to Birchbox is why not give everyone this special box with the awesome full-size makeup/nail products? Why put the box choice out there? Lots of us have been complaining for months that we've been getting too many haircare/skincare samples and not enough makeup/nail samples in our boxes, so why not finally give us all what we want?

Also, why are you only putting these really awesome products in these special boxes that come out once, maybe twice a year? This is what we want to see all year long (Now I know this realistically can't happen every month, but why not every other month?)!

Ok, rant over :)

  1. I opted for the Teen Vogue box, and I was really nervous until it arrived. I love almost everything in my box--the Tarte LipSurgence is awesome! I could have lived without the hair tie, but hey, what can you do? Sorry you didn't like your box. I agree that there should be more makeup/nail products and less haircare stuff. I was afraid the Teen Vogue box was going to be too "Teenybopper-ish" too based on how they described it in the email. I think maybe they wanted people to think that so that they would opt for the other box with the cheaper products.

Love your blog by the way! Just added it to my reader :)

  3. I was actually pretty pleased with what I got - the hot pink polish, a BIG bottle of invigorating shower gel, a foil packet of massage cream, a big tube of curl enhancing cream, buffing beads, plus the beauty balm. This was the best one I've had in a while - my box finally had lots of generously sized products and a lot of things I was eager to try. I have gotten lots of compliments on my neon pink nails! Sorry you didn't like yours :(

  5. I never got a choice of boxes!

  6. I got the teen vogue box even though I'm 24 years old and I'm glad I did. I love Tarte and Essie and those were the two full-sized products. I won't wear the Essie too much because it's glitter, but I know my friends will (we always do nails at my house).

  7. I didn't know we had a choice! I received the Teen Vogue box. Since Teen Vogue sponsored the box it makes sense that better products were included- there was extra funding. But I totally agree with you, if I realized I had the choice I probably would have thought this option would be too "young" for me, and opted for the regular box. Although I totally would have traded the mattifying gel with your Kusmi Tea - Kusmi Tea is sooo good and has very limited distribution in the US.

I opted for the Teen Vogue box but didn't get it.

I actually love the One Love Organics Skin Savior, you must have used too much if it was greasy. I've been using it on my face and it's not at all greasy if you use just a very tiny amount. It makes your skin very soft and matte. Don't slather it on like normal moisturizer.

  9. I'm sorry you didn't like your box again. I didn't get the option for the Teen one. :( But, I actually loved my box. I do drink tea, but I haven't tried it yet. I got a different face cream, which I love. And I really love the two hair samples - I think they make my hair look fabulous. But then, I only wash every 3 days, so maybe I'm just impressed that my hair is clean... I also got an eyelash product that I'm kind of curious about. I've used it but haven't noticed any difference. Oh well.

But I agree... it'd be nice to get more makeup/nail products in our boxes.

  10. I didn't send a preference, and I didn't get the Teen Vogue box. I got...

-the Eau d'Hadrien (liked it much less than other recent scent samples)
-Color Club nail polish in green (bleh on the color. I might try it on my toes, though)
-Nick Cahevez Shampooing cream (looks good!)
-the One Love Organics balm (seems good so far, but I've used it sparingly)
-a Peter Thomas Roth Anti-Aging cleansing gel (looks good)
-the tea (even if I don't use it, someone at work will - I've never had to throw something away)

The nail polish was small, but in that color I don't mind. All the other samples were good sizes, and I like the skin care samples. I definitely felt like my box was a good deal.

  11. I got the Teen Vogue Box which was a questionable move for me to be making at 28 years of age. But I opted in because I knew that if Teen Vogue was putting their name behind it, there would be some great brands at least. So happy I did. The Tarte Lipsurgence is amazing, and the Essie I got in silver glitter which I love (i'm a stay at home mom, so I can wear it whenever I want and also use for manicure day with my little girl.) I also got the Shiseido blotting papers, the same perfume as you (don't love that it doesn't last) and a hair tie which i actually really like. This month was a win for me and probably my favorite box out of 7 I've received so far. So sorry you didn't like yours. Maybe next month you'll get an awesome one and mine will be terrible. --- BTW - I have thrown away one product before from Birchbox --- those horrid lip tattoos!! I got mine in... FISHNET!

  12. Oh no, I'm so sad you threw out the One Love Organica product!! I've been using it on my face and I adore it. You have to wipe it off with a damp washcloth after you massage it in, but I've noticed definite improvement in my skin tone since starting with it! It's just way too expensive to buy a whole container of the stuff.

  13. I like the anti-aging gel a lot. I've been using it as a facial cleanser and it's been working great.

This might be a stupid question, but what are buffing beads??

Yea, I got one of those hair ties in one of my previous boxes and thought it was a joke. It didn't keep my hair up at all and honestly, don't all women have tons of hair ties just laying around the house? There's plenty of other things I'd rather sample than that.

Hmmm. Maybe that was my problem. Too bad I already threw it away!

Did the tattoos actually look like fishnets?? Were they black? Who on Earth would want to wear that on their lips?!?

  20. Don't feel too bad about the Tarte lipsurgence....I bought a Christmas set at sephora that had 5 or 6 full sized lipsurgences (it was priced at just slightly over the cost for one full-sized lipsurgence, so it was a pretty good deal), and most of the colors were really off. One of the colors was almost neon pink, and the only color I liked is the only one that isn't offered regularly for sale by itself. You really didn't miss out on much. :)

  21. They looked like fishnets over bright red! It was horrible and I was horrified. haha! My husband was really happy when I tossed them - I think they scared him a little.

  22. Sounds fun for Goth girls! (I have a few friends who are Goth, and they are the makeup experts in my life.)

  23. Received my first box and soooo disappointed! Did not get the option of choosing, received non Teen Vogue box. Looking forward to a full size product.... Lip tint....... NO luck! Your samples are HUGE compared to mine! Tiny Ahava lotion, mini nail polish, 3 tea bags ,a super tiny perfume sample vial( smashed to dust!! Literally) a broken Orofludio liquid something( only know that cuz that is what the website SAYS should be in box) that is it! So sad! Please tell me it gets better!?

  24. Not a stupid question - I wouldn't know unless I'd gotten the product. It's basically exfoliating stuff that you mix into your cleanser to make it a scrub - this stuff is made with pomegranate peel. It's fine, but I have a scrub that's already mixed in that works nicely and is much less pricey.
