If you follow me on Twitter, then you know that my brand new boots and I had a little bit of an accident on Saturday night. When I was in ULTA, I accidentally dropped a set of three nail polishes on the ground and the gold glitter polish in the set broke open and splattered all over my boots. It was like one of those slow motion moments in the movies. I screamed "Noooooooo" and reached my hand out to catch them, but I just wasn't fast enough :/
After it happened, I just stood there in complete shock for a few seconds. How could this be happening? I had only worn the boots for a total of 4hrs since I got them! Then I went into action mode. I ran over to the tissues and started trying to wipe the polish off the boots. Some of it came off, but quite a bit of it didn't because the polish was already starting to dry. My husband, trying to be helpful, grabbed a random bottle of liquid at those stations where you can try on makeup and told me to spray that on my boots. Um, no? Then some woman came over to me and told me to go home and put either vaseline or non-acetone nail polish remover on them. I passed on her suggestion too. I'm no boot expert, but that just didn't sound right to me.
After that, I just went home and sulked. I know they're just boots and it could have been a lot worse (there were red and pink polishes in that set too), but it was my first day wearing them! My husband told me to rock the splattered glitter nail polish look and to try and make it the next big trend in 2012. Think it would catch on?
Do any of you have any tips on how to get the nail polish off my boots? Will it eventually come off or is it stuck on them forever? Should I attempt to clean them myself or take them to a professional?

Oh no! Argh! I hate it when stuff like that happens! I personally would take it to a professional....you just don't know about nail polish, you wouldn't want to mess up the leather on your boots! Or, if you want to try the non-acetone nail polish remover thing...I have heard that works, however you should test it with a Q-tip on a less noticiable spot! Good luck! P.S. that cardi looks great on you! I picked it up this weekend too!
ReplyDeletei feel for you! take them to a professional leather cleaner if the boots were pricey. they are gorgeous btw. and remember, after you wore them a few more times they'd just be those good ole' boots with stains anyway.
ReplyDeleteOh no I am so sorry to hear about your boots, I would take them to a professional rather than trying to clean them myself. This outfit is adorable. I also am Anthro obsessed and post a lot from their website over on my blog http://savoryandsuede.blogspot.com/ I look forward to reading more of your post!
ReplyDeleteXO,
Rachel
I adore this look on you! The cardigan is darling and the skirt is such a gorgeous color. You look beautiful.
ReplyDeleteSo sorry to hear about your boots! :(

Sara you look great as always I was just gifted that cardi! I don't know if you saw but on EA someone posted the Polka Rounds Clutch is on sale! 99.95
ReplyDeleteOh man, that blows. I'm sorry, girl! I suggest taking them to a professional if they were expensive, but if not really then you can rock the splatter look! A similar thing happened to me too before. A sharp object scratched my boots. Now everytime I look at it I remember the unfortunate, but funny incident. :)
ReplyDeleteLots of love, B

Actually glittered boots are really on trend right now.....but yeah, that totally sucks. I'd be bumming big time.
ReplyDeletep.s. my sister's 100 lb. dog peed on my brand new, first ever designer handbag the first time i put it down. that should at least make you laugh a little.
ReplyDeleteIs it these Steve Madden boots you're referring to? If so, I can't even see any spills! I wonder if the polish would just wear off on its own after awhile, just like polish wears/chips off your nails. I guess I'd wait and see if the glitter flakes off on its own and if not, then take the boots to a professional. I mean, the polish has already dried so there's no rush, right?
ReplyDeleteSara,
ReplyDeleteI was so mortified that this happened to you that I ran a quick Google seach to see what people were saying works. This thread has some first hand experience (and doesn't look like a spam website): http://ths.gardenweb.com/forums/load/cleaning/msg032127138944.html
I hope this helps and let us know what you did with the boots.

ps: I have been stalking both that cardigan and that skirt, and seeing it on you makes me wish I had ordered during the sale. Looks so gorgeous!
I am so sorry! Have you taken them to a shoe repair place? They might be able to help.
ReplyDeleteAck! You can't tell in the pictures that there is any polish on them. I'm willing to bet it will wear off. I don't know if I'd put anything on the boot to try and remove it for fear it would damage the leather.
ReplyDeleteYour outfit is so cute! You look great. Unfortunately... I have no idea about how to clean your boots. That will be a good thing to know!
ReplyDeleteI would try the non-acetone nail polish remover. I've used it on lots of things, including a paperback book (to remove sticker residue). It's never messed anything up. Also, I know lots of people use Goo Gone to clean shoes. Never tried it myself, but you could look into it. Good luck!
ReplyDeleteAh, so sorry to hear about your boots! Though I have to say, I'm not very impressed by Steve Madden's boots. I got the Brigette (paid about 200 Canadian dollars for it), and in about two months, it was already not in great shape. There is absolutely no traction so if it snows, you're pretty much screwed. I had to get a pair of La Canadienne's in January because there was no way I would survive winter in my SM boots. I'd say be careful with them. I think they're only good for fall (or winter in places that don't snow), but even then, I'm doubtful that they'll hold up in the long haul. Sigh.
ReplyDeleteAnyway, I probably wouldn't try the remover because it sounds sketchy and I have a feeling it might remove the color from your boots. Tbh, I wouldn't even bother to take them to a professional. This probably stems for the bad taste that I was left with my Steve Madden boots. It's only been a year since I got mine and believe me, they look as though they've been worn for three years. I just don't think they are worth enough to bring to a professional when they will end up scuffing like mad, and looking so worn after a year. But that's just me.
P.S. Did you take an XS or S for the cardi? I've read reviews that it runs large.
Hi Sara,
ReplyDeleteI was wondering what size you are wearing in that J.Crew skirt, if you feel comfortable sharing? We are about the same size and, as the skirt's on sale today, I am thinking of pouncing. Any advice you can give on sizing is most welcome!
Non-acetone polish remover will do the trick. I had the very same situation with a pair of heels last year and the non-acetone polish remover worked like a charm!
ReplyDeleteOh no, was it these Steve Madden ones? That is horrible! I'm so sorry. I really hope you're able to get the polish off. Don't feel bad about sulking over boots either, I totally would have done the same thing. Let us know if you figure out how to fix this, since I'm sure many of us will be in a similar situation on day :(
ReplyDeleteI would definitely take them to a shoe repair person. I take all my boots to professionals for heel or leather fixes, and it's never very expensive! Plus, I know they know what they are doing. : ) Good luck!
ReplyDeleteYea, I think I'll take them to a professional and see what they would charge and then decide from there.
ReplyDeleteI got the cardigan in a small. It ran pretty TTS for me :)
I got the skirt in a size 4. I also tried on the size 6, but it just looked like too much skirt on me. You know what I mean?
ReplyDeleteYep, it was these boots. You can kinda see the polish in the last picture if you get up really close to the screen.
ReplyDeleteI will definitely let you know what ends up happening with the boots :)
Not yet :/ I'm still trying to find a place outside of the mall. That's where I took my Budding T-Straps when they fell apart, but I don't know if I trust them with this.
ReplyDeleteThanks for looking that up Jen! So nice of you!
ReplyDeleteThe skirt and the cardigan are both still available online. You can still get them :)
I was really surprised that this cardigan didn't sell out online during the 50% off promo. Thought it would be pretty popular, but I guess not!
ReplyDeleteThank you for posting this yesterday! I didn't know about the clutch going on sale until I read your comment. Put me in such a good mood :)
ReplyDeleteA very good point :) They can't stay perfect forever!
ReplyDeleteThat did give me a good laugh :) What did you do???
ReplyDeleteThanks! I ended up ordering the skirt earlier and got a 4 too, so we must have been on the same track. Yay!
ReplyDeleteAck!!!! that just happened to me today too! :(
ReplyDeleteI have Steve Madden boots in Cognac and my orange nail polish spilled. I came across your blog by trying to find a way to remove them. Please let me know if you ever get them off!
It's still on mine :/ I decided to just leave it because people were telling me it really didn't look that bad. Sorry I couldn't be of more help!
