It's the End of the World As We Know It

One of my guilty pleasures is watching a good disaster movie. You know, the ones where the world is about to end because of a virus/asteroid/tornado/flood/zombie takeover/etc. Wanna know why TBS (or maybe it's TNT) shows The Day After Tomorrow on TV almost every weekend? Because people like me will sit and watch it every single time that it's on!

So of course I had to drag my husband to see Contagion this past weekend. It really wasn't that different from all the other disaster movies that I've seen, but for some reason, it really got me freaked out about germs. Anytime a person in the theater coughed, I gave my husband the "Oh my gosh, we're going to get it!" look. By the end of the movie, my arms were nowhere near the armrests and my hands were glued to my thighs so that I wouldn't touch my face with them.

Then later that night we went to a baseball game and I noticed every little gross thing that the people next to me did. I saw the boy next to me stick his fingers in his mouth (playing with his gum) and then he touched his chair and the rail/bar next to him. I saw another boy sneeze into his hands and then he touched both of the armrests next to him along with the top of the seat in front of him. And then I saw a little girl eat half a hotdog that fell on the ground. I wonder what I picked up from them while I was there?

I wouldn't say that this movie has turned me into a total germaphobe, but I'm definitely more aware of what I touch and what people around me are doing.

Are any of you disaster movie lovers like me? Have any of you seen Contagion yet? If you have, are you a total germaphobe now?

*Thanks to Kim, Sian, and Pamela for helping me figure out what color cardigan to wear with this dress :)

  1. I've always been a germaphobe ever since I started teaching. I wash my hands constantly and honestly, a movie like Contagion would probably put me over the edge, LOL. Loving the yellow and blue, girlie!

  3. I saw Contagion this weekend too, by the end of it I was seriously considering investing in a hazmat suit! My boyfriend on the other hand was not freaked out at all by the germs, in fact he managed to keep eating throughout the whole movie!

  6. I am already a germaphobe, so when I saw the preview to Contagion, I knew I could not watch it! It would only make matters worse!

  7. I also LOVE disaster movies - my favorite sub-genre is zombies, followed closely by disease (I think because they are so similar) - I want to see Contagion SO bad, but my boyfriend thinks it looks dumb so I think I'm going to have to go see it by myself or wait until it's in the Redbox. Have you watched the show "The Walking Dead"? It's coming back for a second season sometime soon and is SO good!

  8. Yay! So glad you paired it with the Whirl and Wind - that's what I plan to wear mine with when it gets here. So impatient.
One of my closest friends is a germophobe and it's hilarious, as the years go by, she gets less and less so and I'm becoming more and more of a germaphobe!

  9. I don't consider myself a germaphobe, but I can definitely understand where you are coming from. When the pig flu thing was at it's peak in the media I was PAINFULLY aware of all the people surrounding me especially when I was on the subway. I care hand sanitizer with me and use it after I get out of the mass transit commute. Ewe. Subway hands. Even just typing it is making me shudder.

But anyway, love the dress! And the yellow cardi is contrasting so nicely with the blue! What a great combination! I love yellow and blue together. I also like orange and blue together... even though some find it kind of obnoxious. ;)

I honestly don't know what I'd do without them!

  14. I'm not a disaster movie addict and haven't seen Contagion, but your post really made me laugh. As a teacher by school-year and nanny by summer, I have been around sooo many kids, I can honestly say that germs don't really bother me. Kids suck at washing their hands, and will eat something they dropped on the ground without second thought. The little boy I babysit licked the bottom of his sneakers. Eh, that's life. A little dirt never hurt anybody and our bodies have fantastic immune systems, thank goodness.

I love the blue and yellow combination. It looks great!

  15. Just a suggestion to remove your link to the terrible anthro member ripping people off. Head on over to roxy's blog or gomi to read what's going on. It makes me sick to my stomach all that she has done.

  16. I agree remove the Anthroholic link.

  17. Love the dress and cardi! The bright blue with yellow is gorgeous!!
I just have to say that I was a little sad about the shout out to Kim of Anthroholic, though. I happen to be one of the many, many people she has scammed through her "personal shopping business". She has repeatedly stole, lied, and covered up her actions. After reading all of the comments on Effortlessly Anthropologie, I realized I wasn't alone. I really wish other fashion bloggers wouldn't glorify her (although I'm sure you had no idea of what is going on previously).

  19. Ooh I love disaster movies too! Especially virus/zombie ones... Oddly enough, since I actually am quite aware of germs/viruses around me ;-) I don't think it's the movie's fault though. This is just one of the thoughts that is hard to forget once you've had it.
