Reviews: Spinning Lace Dress, Soft-Structured Dress, Japonica Dress, Recurring Theme Skirt, Attention To Detail Dress

I realized over the weekend that I hadn't done any reviews in the longest time (mostly because I was busy doing the 30 for 30 challenge), so I made my way over to my Anthro store yesterday after work to see what pretties I could find to try on...

Spinning Lace Dress-Size 4-$288 (Currently sold out online)

I finally found one of these little beauties in my size to try on! Sadly, I don't think it will ever make its way into my closet because of the price tag and the fact that there are hardly any left floating around out there, but I think I'm ok with that since I already own the Mullany Dress, which is very similar. I don't have much to say about this dress that hasn't already been said other than to be sure to try on your normal dress size and the next size up. My normal size 4 was VERY snug at the waist...not so tight that I needed to take it off immediately, but I'm pretty sure I would have busted the zipper off of the back of the dress if I attempted to eat a large meal in it! There wasn't a size 6 for me to try on, but I'm guessing that's what I would have gone with for comfort. Oh and if you're pale like me and worried that this dress will wash you out, try pairing a colorful cardigan with it. That's what I do with my Mullany Dress and it works like a charm :)

Soft-Structured Dress-Size Small-$148

I honestly passed right by this dress online (I didn't even know it was online), but in my store, the bright colors immediately jumped out at me and I couldn't get it back to the fitting room fast enough! The majority of this version of the dress is navy with bright, colorful flowers, but it also comes in a solid, dark grey motif. The jersey material makes the dress very form fitting, but the faux-wrap skirt and ruching at the midsection help hide any unforgiving areas you may have. You can't tell from my pictures, but the dress has a boat neck, which I always find flattering on myself and on others because it shows off a little more of the shoulders. I would definitely recommend this dress, especially if you're looking for something that's work appropriate, but that's also sexy enough to wear out for drinks afterwards. Definite sale purchase for me!

Japonica Dress-Size 4-$79.95 (went on sale today)

You definitely need a belt, tights, and heels with this dress to get the full effect and since I didn't have them, I don't have a lot to say about it, good or bad. To me, the colors of the dress appear much more vibrant online than they were in the store. The dress almost looks purple on the product shot, whereas IRL, it was more of a dark ocean blue. I'm not a big fan of cowlnecks, which this one has, and while my normal size 4 surprisingly wasn't too tight in the hips, it was too tight in the shoulders. I felt a lot of pulling when I reached my arms forward and to the sides. It's a pass for me, but like I said earlier, if you really think that this might be the dress for you, try it on with accessories before making a final decision.

This skirt is another one that I flew right past online, but I was immediately drawn to its interesting design and vibrant colors in the store (navy, gold, and salmon). It's pull on style, has accordion pleats all around, and is machine washable which is always a plus. One of the issues I have with the skirt is that I couldn't for the life of me find anything to pair with it on top color wise. I held it up to probably 20 different tops in the store and only ended up with this one because I was desperate. I also thought the skirt made my hips look like they were bulging out on the sides, which is never a good thing. Maybe it was the pleats or maybe I just tried it on with the wrong top...I don't know, but either way, this skirt is a pass for me!

Attention To Detail Dress-Size Small-$59.95 (went on sale today)

I'm still trying to decide if I look more like a girl scout, safari girl, or a sack of potatoes in this dress. What do you think? I'm leaning towards a sack of potatoes. Honestly I don't think I have one positive thing to say about this dress. As you can see from the picture, the taupe color is very drab on me and the drawstring provides little definition at the waist, so the dress just looks like it's hanging on me. The oversized pockets on the hips also don't do me any favors. Big pass for me, even with an extra 25% off.

  2. Aw, I actually like the attention to detail dress on you! I guess sometimes things photograph well but don't actually look good in real life.

These reviews are super-helpful...I almost pulled the trigger on the Japonica dress this morning, but decided to wait until I could try it on in a store.

  4. I've been lusting after spinning lace dress 4 a while too and I think it looks so lovely on you. But I'm with you on this dress too, as much as I love it, I can't justify paying almost $300 for it. And if it ever goes on sale, I'm sure there won't be any left in my size. :( oh well, some things r not meant to be.

  11. It's too bad the Spinning Lace dress is so pricey because it really looks divine on you. And pairing it with a bright cardi is a great idea. I have a similar complexion to you, so I will definitely try this with my lighter dresses and tops!
