Ant Farm

So last night while I was sleeping on the couch, my husband decided to order himself an ant farm off of Amazon. He says he's fulfilling some childhood dream that he had that his mom always shot down.

Now part of me loves the idea of having my own ant farm. I think it will be fun to watch them create their little tunnels and....well, I'm not sure what else they do, but I'm sure it will be interesting to just sit and watch them.

Another part of me wants to throw the package away when it arrives and I can just tell my husband that it must have gotten lost in the mail and wasn't meant to be. I mean, what if I come home one day and find that the ant farm accidentally fell off the table and broke? I don't want to wake up one night and find ants crawling all over me!

Would you guys let your husbands/boyfriends get an ant farm? Do any of you have an ant farm or have you had one in the past?

Spring is officially here (has been unofficially for some time now) and while most people have been out enjoying the beautiful weather, I've been curled up on my couch reading The Walking Dead comics and watching college basketball.

Season 2 of The Walking Dead (TV show) just ended and season 3 doesn't start up until late October, so I decided to start reading the comics in hopes that they will tide me over until the fall.

The funny thing about me watching college basketball is that I never watch it during the regular season. I don't have a favorite team and could really care less about it, but for some reason, I get really into it when the NCAA tournament starts. I research all the teams, spend a good hour filling out my bracket, and watch (almost) every game like it's my job. My bracket is currently in 4th place out of 10 at work. I have Kentucky, Michigan State, Kansas, and Ohio State going to the Final Four and I have Kentucky winning it all. Go Wildcats!

Have any of you other Walking Dead TV show fans read the comics? What did you think of them? Who do you college basketball fans have winning the NCAA tournament?

March Birchbox

IMG_6890

This month, the people at Birchbox gave their subscribers a choice between two boxes. The regular March box or a special Teen Vogue box. I decided to go with the regular March box because I thought that the Teen Vogue box would be geared more towards teens and their beauty needs. That choice ended up being a big mistake, but I'll talk more about that later. Here's what I got in my box...

1) Annick Goutal Eau d'Hadrien - Not a fan of this perfume at all. It has a strong lemon scent (think cleaning supplies) that goes away after only a few minutes. This is good for me because I don't like the smell, but bad for people out there who do like "clean" scents and want them to last throughout the day.

2) Color Club Nail Lacquer in Jackie Oh! - This polish was the only thing in my box that I really liked this month. It's hot pink, which is perfect for spring/summer and is basically opaque after one coat. I'll probably use two coats when I wear it, but you could get away with just one. My one complaint is that the bottle isn't full-size. The people who got the Teen Vogue box got a full-size polish. Why didn't we?

3) One Love Organics Skin Savior Waterless Beauty Balm - This product can be used as a cleanser or a moisturizer and can be used on your face or your body. I didn't use it on my face because I'm always hesitant to try new products on my face, but I did use it on my hands. I'm sad to say that I had to throw it away after just one use because it was so greasy! My hands looked like I had just eaten a bucket of fried chicken! Also, the dry patches on my hands still felt very rough after I applied it. The balm really just sat on the tops of my hands. It didn't sink into my skin and there was nothing moisturizing about it. I'm actually really sad that this product didn't work out because it smells amazing! Like a fruity orange drink.

4) Oscar Blandi Pronto Wet Instant Volumizing Shampoo and Conditioner - This shampoo is supposed to help give your hair lots of volume and the conditioner is supposed to soften your hair and help it dry faster. I've used both four different times now and haven't noticed any changes, good or bad. The one big negative for me with these products is the smell. They smell like Pledge (the wood cleaner) and that smell lasts on your hair for several hours.

5) Kusmi Tea Detox Tea (Bonus) - I'm not a tea drinker and my husband wasn't interested, so I threw them away :(

So as I'm sure you can tell, I once again wasn't happy with my box this month :/

Which box did you choose? The Teen Vogue box or the regular Birchbox? What did you get in your box? Were you happy with your samples?

*As I mentioned earlier, Birchbox sent out two different boxes this month. A Teen Vogue box and the regular March box. The people who chose the Teen Vogue box received a full-size Essie nail polish, a full size Tarte LipSurgence (a lip tint), and then a few other smaller samples.

Now my question to Birchbox is why not give everyone this special box with the awesome full-size makeup/nail products? Why put the box choice out there? Lots of us have been complaining for months that we've been getting too many haircare/skincare samples and not enough makeup/nail samples in our boxes, so why not finally give us all what we want?

Also, why are you only putting these really awesome products in these special boxes that come out once, maybe twice a year? This is what we want to see all year long (Now I know this realistically can't happen every month, but why not every other month?)!

Ok, rant over :)

The Ugly Duckling

IMG_6745

Dress: Anthropologie Wightwick Manor Dress
Belt: Anthropologie Synapse Belt
Boots: Steve Madden

This dress has gotten no love from me since I first brought it home back in 2010. I've tried to put outfits together with it several times over the last year, but it never ends up making it out the front door. My biggest complaints with it are the pattern and the colors. The pattern reminds me of my grandma's couch or curtains from the 70's and the colors are just so bland and dull. The dress also isn't lined, so if you wear tights with it, the velvety feeling material bunches up like crazy.

I decided to give the dress one more chance this past week before getting rid of it during my spring cleaning and I don't know what happened, but I actually really liked it this time. I think it must have been the nice weather and the fact that I didn't have to wear tights with it. It also could have been the boots. In the past, I've always tried pairing the dress with flats or heels and they just never looked right with it.

I probably won't be wearing this dress again anytime soon because it's more of a fall/winter dress, but it's definitely a keeper!

Stuck on Wu

IMG_6654

Dress: Jason Wu for Target
Cardigan: J.Crew
Belt: Forever 21
Shoes: Target
Bag: Jason Wu for Target

I finally got my hands on this Jason Wu dress! Carol was kind enough to pick it up for me at her Target in a size 6 the day the collection launched, but then I saw a picture of my size twin Kathryn wearing the dress in a size 4 and I realized that I needed a 4 too. So I stalked the Target website for days and it finally popped back up in my size :)

Of course I wanted to wear the dress to work the day after it arrived, but I had no clue what colors to pair it with, so it just hung untouched in my closet for a few weeks. I eventually decided to wear a black cardigan and heels with it because that's how Jason Wu styled it on one of those morning shows (well, I doubt that it was really him who dressed the model) and I trust that he knows what he's doing. I actually think it will look even better in the spring/summer with just the black heels and belt and no cardigan.

I also wore tights with this outfit to work because 1) The dress is kinda short, 2) It was only in the 50's outside, and 3) My legs are still super pale, but that was a BIG mistake. The dress clung to the tights like crazy and kept riding up on me all throughout the day. I even had a slip on underneath it, but that didn't seem to help. I tried to hide out in my office all day, but when I did have to leave, I made sure that I carried something in front of me so that no one could see the issues that I had going on. Lesson here? Do not wear tights with this dress EVER or you will pay!

Make It Work

Dress: Gap
Cardigan: J.Crew
Belt: Forever 21
Boots: Steve Madden
Bracelet: J.Crew

I picked this dress up at Gap over the weekend when they were having their 30% off sale. It's a size too big for me, but I'm determined to make it work because I'm obsessed with the colors and the design. I think I might just use the money I saved from the sale on alterations. The straps just need to be shortened about an inch and the sides (under the arms) could stand to be taken in a little too. Shouldn't cost too much, I hope!

I actually wore this outfit yesterday to my second professional hockey game. It wasn't exactly the most practical outfit for a sporting event in a cold arena, but our team's main color is red and this was the closest thing I had to red that was clean. Before we left for the game, I decided to swap out my brown skinny belt for this yellow one. The brown belt just made the whole outfit look a little too "matchy-matchy" and I was in the mood to wear some bright colors since it was such a gorgeous day outside.

March Photo A Day Challenge: Days 1-7

I had so much fun doing this last month, that I decided to play along again this month!

photo-585
Day 1-Up
Planes at the National Air and Space Museum. Not really my thing, but they were fun to take pictures of.

photo-584
Day 2-Fruit
If I had to choose only one food group to eat for the rest of my life, it would hands down be the fruit group. I love that I can eat a huge plate of fruit like this every day for a snack and not have to worry about putting on any extra lbs.

photo-586
Day 4-Bedside
I basically had to promise my husband the rights to our firstborn son's name before he would agree to let me buy these lamps from Target. He wanted them to be a more "manly" color like navy blue or black, but I thought these went nicely with the bedspread and they add a nice pop of color to the room.

photo-583
Day 5-A Smile
These make me smile :) It's like dipping a regular Oreo into a tub of Funfetti icing.

photo-589
Day 6-5pm
Trying to find something to make for dinner. Not really much to choose from, is there?

photo-587
Day 7-Something You Wore
I finally got to wear my new Jason Wu for Target dress! It was kind of a disaster though (DO NOT wear this dress with tights), but I'll tell you more about that when I post my OOTD photos.
